How We're
Organized

CLSAB has been structured to avoid costly bureaucracy and is therefore efficient, responsive and provides excellent value.

Board of Directors

It is overseen by an independent Board of Directors, which works through consensus to set overall policy and direction, while the Executive Committee administers activities between meetings.

Committees

A Members’ Committee, made up of accredited Lumber Grading Agencies, sets the dues that fund the majority of the operations of CLSAB. The Members’ Committee Chair also Chairs the CLSAB Executive Committee.

In order to ensure impartiality, both the Executive Committee and the Members’ Committee can only make recommendations to the Board – the independent Board of Directors has the ultimate decision-making authority.

There are also two standing committees which report to the Board:

The Operations Committee monitors the performance of Lumber Grading Agencies, recommends actions relating to the organization including continual review of the regulations, appoints review panels and makes recommendations as required for disciplinary action, and provides input into grading rules, product standards and matters related to codes.

The Strategic Planning Committee develops longer term plans for CLSAB. They also address more immediate needs from time to time: currently international recognition of CLSAB, and staffing requirements for the organization.

Other CLSAB committees and Task Groups are established as required to deal with specific, shorter-term issues.

Staff

CLSAB staff is headed by a President and CEO who reports to the Board Chair and the Members’ Committee Chair. A Vice President, Technical Operations, oversees all the technical aspects of CLSAB and provides both technical and strategic support to the President and CEO. Field Inspection Supervisors (east and west) ensure quality control of grading and other activities carried out by the accredited Grading Agencies, who in turn are responsible for inspection and quality control of mill/treatment facility-level activities across Canada.
